'Someone asked the other day, 'What was your favorite fast food when you were growing up?'

'We didn't have fast food when I was growing up,' I informed him.

'All the food was slow..'

'C'mon, seriously Where did you eat?'

'It was a place called "at home", I explained. !

'Mom cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn't like what she put on my plate I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.'

By this time, the kid was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn't tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table.

But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I figured his system could have handled it :

Some parents NEVER owned their own house, never wore Levis , never set foot on a golf course, never traveled out of the country or had a credit card.

In their later years they had something called a revolving charge card. The card was good only at Sears Roebuck.. Or maybe it was Sears & Roebuck.

Either way, there is no Roebuck anymore. Maybe he died.

My parents never drove me to soccer practice.. This was mostly because we never had heard of soccer... I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed, (slow)

We didn't have a television in our house until I was 16..

It was, of course, black and white, and the station went off the air at midnight, after playing the national anthem and a poem about God; it came back on the air at about 6 a..m. and there was usually a locally produced news and farm show on, featuring local people.

I was 21 before I tasted my first pizza, it was called 'pizza pie.'

When I bit into it, I burned the roof of my mouth and the cheese slid off, swung down, plastered itself against my chin and burned that, too. It's still the best pizza I ever had.

I never had a telephone in my room.

The only phone in the house was in the living room and it was on a party line. Before you could dial, you had to listen and make sure some people you didn't know weren't already using the line.

Pizzas were not delivered to our home But milk was.

All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers -- It cost 7 cents a paper, and they got to keep 2 cents. They had to get up at 6AM every morning.

On Saturday, they had to collect the 42 cents from their customers. Their favorite customers were the ones who gave them 50 cents and told them to keep the change.. Their least favorite customers were the ones who seemed to never be home on collection day.

Movie stars kissed with their mouths shut. At least, they did in the movies. There were no movie ratings because all movies were responsibly produced for everyone to enjoy viewing, without profanity or violence or most anything offensive.

If you grew up in a generation before there was fast food, you may want to share some of these memories with your children or grandchildren Just don't blame me if they bust a gut laughing

My Dad is cleaning out my grandmother's house (she died in December) and he brought me an old Royal Crown Cola bottle. In the bottle top was a stopper with a bunch of holes in it. I knew immediately what it was, but my daughter had no idea. She thought they had tried to make it a salt shaker or something. I knew it as the bottle that sat on the end of the ironing board to 'sprinkle' clothes with because we didn't have steam irons. Man, I am old.

How many do you remember?

Head lights dimmer switches on the floor.
Ignition switches on the dashboard.
Heaters mounted on the inside of the fire wall.
Real ice boxes.
Pant leg clips for bicycles without chain guards.
Soldering irons you heat on a gas burner.
Using hand signals for cars without turn signals.

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE
1930's, 40's, 50's,
60's and 70's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.

We took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-base paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes,
we had baseball caps
not helmets on our heads.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes.

Riding in the back of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes made with Lard, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank FLAV-OR- AID made with real white sugar. And, we weren't overweight. WHY?

Because we were always outside playing....that's why!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on..
No one was able to reach us all day. And, we were OKAY.

We would spend hours building our go-carts

out of scraps
and then ride them

down the hill,
only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem

We did not have Play stations, Nintendo's and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video

movies or DVD's,
no surround-sound or CD's,
no cell phones,
no personal computers,
no Internet and

no chat rooms.

WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and

found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We would get spankings with wooden spoons, switches, ping pong paddles, or just a bare hand and no one would call child services to report abuse.

We ate worms and mud pies
made from dirt, and
the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone

made the team.
Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.

Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best
risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever.

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. What can kids today do besides push buttons..

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.

If YOU are one of them, CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.

While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave and lucky their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it ?

SIMPLE CHICKEN SOUP

I tried to edit the "Flu Season" post and add this recipe to it, but for some reason, it would not edit, so I am adding it here.

HERE IT IS!!!! SIMPLE CHICKEN SOUP!
Boil a chicken in a pot where the water covers the chicken completely. Boil until tender enough to pull apart with no pink flesh showing when you poke it with a fork. After it's cooked, take out the chicken, put on a plate to cool. SAVE THE LIQUID IT WAS COOKED IN! When cool enough to handle, take the chicken apart into bite size pieces. Put back in the pot, and add sliced carrots, celery, onion and garlic to taste, then add a carb like rice or noodles or potato chunks. Simmer until it's all tender.

I'm watching the first ever show of "Dr. Oz." He says the second wave of H1N1virus (Swine flu) is coming in October. I have had it, so I HOPE I am immune. Thankfully, it was a very easy flu because we already had an anti-viral medication on hand. I would like to advise you to call your Dr. and ask him to call your pharmacy for a prescription of an anti-virus. In Canada it is "Amantadine", and in the USA it's called Tamiflu or generic oseltamivir.

If you do get the flu, chicken soup, (sometimes called Italian Penicillin or Jewish Penicillin, because those cultures give chicken soup for almost every illness,) has been scientifically proven to have anti-viral and antibiotic properties. It is suggested to have chicken soup twice a day while your symptoms are present. It provides fluids, to keep you from getting dehydrated, the steam opens your clogged sinus passages, some doctors believe it has anti-inflammatory properties.

According to Dr. Irwin Ziment, a pulmonary specialist at the University of California, Los Angeles, the magic ingredient is most likely cysteine, an amino acid that is abundant in chicken soup. It works much like the chemical acetylcysteine that is used in medicines prescribed to combat congestion. The Orange County Register also notes that chicken soup may be a mild antibiotic that could help the body fight infection.
Chicken Soup: At the first sign of a scratchy throat or the sniffles, make a pot of chicken soup. "It works every time," Jyl Steinback, author of "Superfoods: Cook Your Way to Health," told the Orange County Register.

As soon as my daughter gets a minute she is going to give me her fantastic, easy chicken soup recipe, with homemade noodles that are so easy it will make you laugh. The noodles puff up, filled with soup flavor, and are very filling. Then I'll share it with you. HURRY DAUGHTER!

Other Flu Helps:

Also drink lots of fluids to flush the virus from your body, and stay out of public so you don't pass it on. Wash your hands every chance you can get when you are around a person with the flu, and don't share towels, wash cloths or eating utensils or dishes without washing them well first.
www.doctoroz.com says to keep 5 things in your house for the next 4 months.

1) Cleaners. Just soap and water cleans and kills germs and viruses. No need for all the antibacterial cleaners, which won't work on viruses anyway. Wash hands often, and phones, doorknobs, drawer handles, remote controls, water taps, toys, get a cloth damp with Lysol disinfectant spray, or a disinfectant liquid with water on a cloth and wring out until barely damp, then wipe down cell phones, Ipods, blackberries, other wireless hand held computers, and other things that are touched often. Use the alcohol based gels to clean your hands when you are away from home. Spray the computer keyboard and mouse with disinfectant spray.

2) Medical masks. If your child has the flu and won't wear the mask, YOU wear it when around him/her.

3) One month worth of food in case the health department quarantines your house and no one can go in or out. I wondered about milk, then remembered you can freeze milk in a deep freezer, or if you buy the vanilla soy milk, it is very delicious, all protein and calcium, and comes in large juice boxes that can be kept on a shelf for 2 years instead of in the fridge. Then when they are opened, put them in the fridge.

4) Pre-biotics and Pro-biotics in capsules or in yogurt. This is what strengthens the immune system most. The immune system is based in the digestive system.

5) Tylenol or cold and flu meds; and if possible, get a prescription for an anti-viral now, to keep in the house. You won't feel good enough to go get it when you are sick. Also get a new toothbrush for each person for when their flu is over. Many times colds and flu keep coming back because the germs are stored in the toothbrush.

Get immunized. (This is a controversial subject right now, but do what you think is the right thing.)

I found this sign in a magazine and it made me smile, because I really enjoy looking at pictures of retro signs of products that are no longer around, or that have changed their image, and signs that would only be shown at certain times in history like the WW2 signs people would see. Well now, this sign will become one of those signs of the past, that indicates a time in history. It's almost a collectible or retro sign even though it's new!

Canadian TV commercials are urging people to cough into the inside bend of your elbow rather than on your hands, where the germs then get transferred to anything you touch.

The good thing is, once you've had it, you are immune to it! I am, so I don't have to worry about getting it again or about getting the vaccination.

If you go to http://www.faceinhole.com/ you will find hundreds of pictures, and easy instructions of how to take a picture off the computer of yourself and fit it into the hole in the face of the picture you choose. I did a lot of brides and retro characters, etc. I have a color version of this, but the skin coloring of our faces are so different than the necks of the original picture, that the black and white looked a lot more authentic. It didn't hurt that my hubby has darker skin like Ricky. lol. GO HAVE FUN! Be a mermaid or a cowboy or a superhero or a covergirl or a pinup or hundreds more!

BEING A LADY, NOT JUST A FEMALE

When I was a little girl walking down the sidewalk with my grandmother, I said "Look at that lady!" She said "Call her a woman. We are not sure yet if she is a lady or not." Being a lady meant that she had been raised in a moral and pleasing manner, with etiquette and graciousness and other nurturing qualities.

They had to learn these things from finishing schools, etiquette classes, poise classes, girls' schools, modeling schools. Up until about 1975, there were books written about how to sit, stand, walk, use your hands gracefully, how to deal with manners and difficult situations, grooming, and everything that separates us from the male race, but those books are almost impossible to find these days, and when I looked for some for my own girls, or looked online, I found many lessons on how a cross-dresser could be more feminine, but that same teacher would not take on girls or ladies to teach THEM the same skills!

Our world has changed so much, that if a space ship visited earth in 1975, then came back today, they might say "Oops, this is not the right planet. Nothing is the same except that there are still humans, animals and homes and cars, but they think and act completely different, their society is completely different."

Do You need To Update Your Make-up Technique?

It is so easy to get stuck with the same make-up technique you learned when you first started wearing makeup. I used to be a make-up artist, and then a model, so I updated my look as often as I could figure out how these artistic effects were created, but since I have been mostly housebound for 10 years, I just experimented, but didn't learn the most up-to-date style. Now that I am starting my new life with my new husband, and will be going out almost daily, I need an update. Few of us can afford a spa makeover in this economy, so here is how I learned and practiced a bit myself.

You can almost tell the age of a woman by noting the eye shadow colors she uses, the eyeliner thickness or heaviness, the lip color and the blush technique. I went to youtube.com to try to find a natural, yet noticeable updated technique for the whole face, but couldn't really find what I wanted, only separately, like eyes or cheeks or lips or contouring and highlighting. This morning I found a great article that addresses all the face products for a natural daytime look. For nighttime look, you just make the colors deeper/darker, and the eyeliner a bit thicker. I wanted to share this letter I wrote to a fellow blogger. There is a lot of good information in it about marriage and homemaking and the influence of women and more.

Hi Stacy,

I wanted to leave a comment on your blog but when I click on the "leave comment", nothing happens.

I love the name of your blog "A Helpmeet for Him" http://helpmeetforhim.blogspot.com/ because you are among the few of us who know the power and influence of a woman and CHOOSE to support and help our husbands, and don't consider ourselves less than a man in any way. I have run across a lot of ladies like this in the blogging world. Most of us are SAHMs (stay at home moms), homemakers, and love it. That is not always possible because of the crazy economy, so there are some working moms in there too. There is a new name for us. "Apronistas".

I think I read that you have fibromyalgia. Is that right or did I mix you up with someone else? I have it too, along with lupus and several other severely painful conditions. Fibromyalgia seems to have become an epidemic!

I have 3 blogs, and one is dedicated to being an old fashioned wife and mother and homemaker. http://kindaretro.blogspot.com (You can click on my profile there and see the other 2 blogs that I have.)
On that blog I list many other blogs of Apronistas. They love aprons, the symbol of the wife who takes her homemaking, mothering and wifely duties seriously.

I just got 2 WONDERFUL books that you might want to mention on your blog. They are by the same author. They are Christian books. The first one is called "Sacred Influence" by Gary Thomas.The sub title says "How God Uses Wives to shape the souls of their husbands." It seems that the last few generations have forgotten how much power and influence we have as women, and why men need our help. We really are stronger than men in emotional sense, and can do multi-tasking, and nurturing, and have spiritual insight that most men don't have. When we stay close to the Lord, we are given guidance for all those that we are responsible for. The mother and wife is the center of all society. We create the personalities of our children and husbands to a certain extent. Of course there will always be exceptions to every rule.

Gary Thomas also wrote a companion book to the one I just mentioned, called "Sacred Marriage" subtitle: What if Marriage was meant to make us Holy more than to make us happy? Since the 60s, people have forgotten WHY to stay together even if things get hard, and that we should try to fix things, not just throw them away. There is an old saying from the depression "Use it up, fix it up, make it do or do without."

I think this financial crisis might teach people many valuable qualities that were learned in that depression, and instead of just throwing away things that are not perfect, including relationships, we will fix things and keep them longer. I think I am going to post this letter to my blog so others can get this message as well.

These past few generations were not taught much of anything at home because either they lived in a single parent household, so the parent had to work so many hours that they didn't have time to teach living skills to the children, or there are also families who just spoiled their children by giving them video games and all sorts of electronic gadgets to fill their time instead of using their time to learn how to be independent and self sufficient when they leave home. Thank goodness for programs such as FLYladies, who teach people how to run a household. They have all different levels and categories, like beginners, or working moms, or chronically ill homemakers, or advanced skill homemakers. the FLY in FLYladies stands for Finally Loving Yourself, and it guides you step by step each day through emails to help you keep your life organized and teach you how to care for your home. There are millions of members world wide, with online support groups through the yahoo support groups for just about any group of people with a similar interest. www.flylady.net You can start out as a FLYbaby, and take baby steps to learn how to run a household, and work up from there. Since I am so limited by pain, I stayed in flybabies. Their trick is that you do the assignments only 5 minutes at a time. I was absolutely SHOCKED to find out how much I could get done in a day by working only 5 minutes at a time, every half hour.

I have a theory about Adam & Eve's creation. It goes like this. God created man, and was very pleased. He thought "Look at what I have created. His mind is able to concentrate so well on one task at a time that he can create homes, cities, whole civilizations. He can solve problems and create inventions and cures and organizations. He can go through war and hardship and bounce back and carry on because he is concentrating only on what is happening at that very moment, not how it will affect everyone else or how it will affect his future. He won't get distracted easily. I have really created a powerful creature this time. One who can be master over his whole world." Then He thought for a moment...."Uh oh....he is going to need someone to take care of all the other details that will need handling while he is thinking of that one thing at a time!" Therefore, he created the multi-tasking woman, the partner, the helpmeet, the nurturer, the one who loves organization and order, the one who has emotions and not just analytical thoughts.

Men work mostly from the right side of their brain, which handles logic and facts. Women work from both sides of their brain. The left side of the brain handles the creative, artistic, emotional, spiritual reasoning ideas.

Then I noticed a scripture that stood out. It said "It is not good for man to be alone." I have known men who have spent their lifetime alone, and they have not fully developed. They are like bears in apartments. hahaha. It's like if they did not find "their other half", they only half way developed the thoughts and skills needed to live fully. Women do better on their own than men.

Men and women have different talents, and together, they make a great team. One book that saved my marriage a couple of times was the first book of the series "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus". It tells how men and women think differently, and it's really fascinating. After reading that book, I thought "We are so very different, its amazing that we can even live on the same planet together, much less in the same house!" It even has a "decoding" section. It states some comments that a husband or wife might say, and tells what the wife thinks when she hears that comment, and what the husband thinks when he hears that comment, and it's completely opposite. It teaches you how to talk his language and how to get through to him.

Another similar and more up-to-date book I bought and hope to read ASAP is called "Love & Respect. The Love She Most Desires, the Respect He Desperately needs." It's by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs and is also a Christian book.

I think life goes in cycles, and society has gotten so far away from family values and honorable character traits that society is falling apart, so people are more and more turning to the old fashioned stable ways of creating and raising a family. There are more and more books on the subject, and even an award winning Christian movie that was shown nation-wide in secular theaters, and was accepted so well, that the producers now see that people DO want more decent movies, and they plan on making more. The movie I speak of is called "Fireproof". Its about a firefighter having marriage problems, and how he and his wife finally learn how to make their marriage "fireproof" and strong enough to withstand any danger that might threaten it. It came out on video just 2 weeks ago.

I'm sorry to make this so long. I am just so happy when I meet someone else who chooses to have a biblical marriage, and who understands her influence as a woman. I hope we can get to know each other through our blogs or by emailing, and I will be adding your blog to my list of blogs for others to check out.

My favorite magazine in the whole world. A bit pricey, so I buy the back issues from used bookstores or on eBay or even from online bookstores that sell used copies. Each issue is a feast for the eyes. I keep them on my coffee table for others to enjoy. Some of it can be seen online as well. If I remember right, I first wrote to them and asked them for a sample of the magazine and enclosed a check for $5 for the magazine and shipping, and they sent me one so I could see if I liked it enough to subscribe.

I apologize for the awkward spacing in this post. I tried to reset it 9 times, but I just got the format you see below, or at least 2 inches between each line, and couldn't fix it no matter what I tried.

How many of these do you remember hearing your parents or grandparents saying????

"With the passing of time, many old phrases become obsolete or even disappear.This is unfortunate because some of them are very appropriate and humorous. Here is a list that I came up with that I remember my parents and grandparents using that we don't hear much anymore. Perhaps you have some memorable old phrases of your own that you could add to the list by leaving a comment:

"I'll just give this a lick and a promise", (wipe it up now with promise to clean it up better later).

A Bone to Pick (someone who wants to discuss a disagreement)

An Axe to Grind (Someone who has a hidden motive.This phrase is said to have originated from Benjamin Franklin who told a story about a devious man who asked how a grinding wheel worked. He ended up walking away with his axe sharpened free of charge)

A bad apple spoils the whole barrel (one corrupt person can cause all the others to go bad if you don't remove the bad one)

At sea (lost or not understanding something)

Bad Egg (Someone who was not a good person)

Barking at a knot (meaning that your efforts were as useless as a dog barking at a knot.)

Bee in your bonnet (To have an idea that won't let loose)

Been through the mill (had a rough time of it)

Blinky (Between sweet and sour as in milk)

Calaboose (a jail)

Cattywampus (Something that sits crooked such as a piece of furniture sitting at an angle)

Feather In Your Cap (to accomplish a goal. This came from years ago in wartime when warriors might receive a feather they would put in their cap for defeating an enemy)

Well, if you hold your horses, I reckon I'll get this whole kit and caboodle done and sent off to you. Please don't be too persnickety and get a bee in your bonnet because I've been pretty tuckered out and at sea lately because I'm no spring chicken.I haven't been just stringin' around and I know I'm not the only duck in the pond, but I do have too many irons in the fire. I might just be barking at a knot, but I have tried to give this article more than just a lick and a promise."

Hi. I have looked through the help section of blogspot/blogger.com and can't find anything about this. You know how some pictures are animated and have the ending of .gif, like I have an angel picture of an angel pouring blessings from the sky, and the title is angel.gif . When I insert the picture into my blog, no animations show up. Why, and is there any way to make it so the animation DOES show up? Thanks

The History Of Aprons

Remember when a woman wouldn't dare cook without an apron? An apron is the symbol now of retro/vintage women. Modern retro women often collect aprons, and give them as gifts. I saw a mom's get-together where the theme was retro, and the hostess passed out an apron to each guest to wear throughout the party and to take home.

I don't think our kids know what an apron is.

The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.

And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

If family came to dinner, there were other aprons in the kitchen for the other 'women-folk' to help out with preparations.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.

Compared to today... Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.

They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron. I don't think I ever caught anything from an Apron. (Of course they were washed more often than the clothes underneath.)
